Milan - Day 3

Wednesday, August 10

We had a sleep in today and set off late morning to see if we could fluke an entry into Leonardo's The Last Supper, but alas it wasn't to be. Oh well, gives us a reason to come back to Milan! We walked around the area checking out some of the amazing houses, churches and shops, and came across the Catholic University, part of the old city wall and a war memorial. Unfortunately a number of churches were closed because of the summer holidays.

Our next objective was the museum at La Scala, the famous Opera House in Milan. We did get a sneak peek into the Opera House but it was undergoing some renovations before the season starts in December. The museum contained lots of portraits of the famous composers, singers and musicians as well as various personal items of these people, with many of the items having been donated over the years. It was really well set out and there were English descriptions as well which helped us. The famous Italian composers are revered here, closely followed by the opera singers, and La Scala's history goes back over 200 years. There was also an exhibition on Riccardo Muti, a recent famous conductor, which included video clips of him conducting as well as video of different operas he has conducted and costumes from some of these operas. This too was very good and gave us more insight into the world of opera.

Did you know that Milan has a Happy Hour? Neither did we until this trip, and we found it can start as early as 5:30pm and go until 11:30pm! The deal is you pay 10 Euro for any drink and then you can help yourself to the buffet that's provided - this can include cold meat, salads, a selection of hot dishes and also dessert!! We think it's a good deal, especially when you don't feel like anything in particular, and the quality is pretty good. We also discovered that Milan has an area with canals, and this is where we ate tonight - sitting outside with a G&T, enjoying good Italian food in a delightful setting, it was a great way to end our time in Milan.
