Milan - Day 2

Tuesday, August 9

We were up early this morning to connect with our tour, which was leaving at 8:30am! We made it easily, met our guide Alice and 20 other guests, boarded the bus and we were off to Lugano in Switzerland. This trip only took about an hour, as most of Milan is on holidays so there was very little traffic about. The scenery was great and we reached Lugano, a nice town on the shores of Lake Lugano - it also has all the usual shops, but the highlights were a top end chocolate shop and a salumeri which specialised in all sorts of salami and other cold meats.

We had about 90 minutes free time here before we boarded the bus and set off for Lake Como. The road reminded us of the Amalfi coast as it was narrow, hilly and with lots of hairpin bends, and the scenery was nearly as spectacular. We arrived safely on the shores of Lake Como and caught a ferry across to Bellagio, which was only about 10 minutes away. We had 3 hours here to look around, and it was also our lunch stop, so we set off and found a nice place to eat overlooking the lake.

After lunch we wandered around checking out the shops and exploring the small alleys that run up and down from the lake to the top road. On this top road, which also served as the footpath, we went into St.Giacomo's church which had some amazing frescoes painted on the walls and ceilings but unfortunately they weren't in very good condition. Just as we were boarding the ferry for the 2 hour trip to Como the heavens opened, but we kept dry inside. It was a pity as we missed seeing some of the villas and lovely scenery, but it was still a great trip.

As we got closer to Como the weather improved, so we had a great view of George Clooney's villa as we went passed.

In Como we walked to our bus and got back to Milan about 7:30pm, so it was a long day but a good one. We only wanted a small dinner, so we asked the Concierge for a recommendation and he sent us to the Osteria Fara, and what a night this turned out to be! We were greeted with a glass of Prosecco, we had red wine with our delicious pasta and then they poured 2 glasses of Limoncello for us! We laughed as we walked back to our hotel and literally fell into bed - it was a long day but a very memorable one!
