Monday, August 1
We enjoyed a leisurely breakfast by the pool prepared by our host Emmanuel, who is an ex-chef so there was a huge variety of goodies both hot and cold, savoury and sweet, healthy and bad!! We then set off using the local bus service to Victoria, the main city on Gozo, which is about a mile away. Normally we would walk, but with it being so hot we decided against it.
Victoria was busier than we thought for a Monday, and the shops were larger in size and more modern than in Valletta where we stayed. However we found in the old part of Victoria that the streets were more like alleys with lots of twists and turns to confuse any attackers.
The main tourist attraction is the Citadel, which was built to originally protect the local people, but as the population grew it couldn't hold them all, so it took on more of a military role. Unfortunaly in more recent times (like the 1800s and 1900s) bits have been rebuilt and the old original bits lost, but this didn't detract from the strategic position it maintains on top of a hill with fantastic views in every direction. It was great walking around the walls, but it was very very hot!
To cool down we went to The Citadel Experience, a sound and light show that traced the history of the Citadel, which was located in the old reservoirs that the British had built in the late 1800s. It was brilliantly done, and nice and cool. We also went to the nearby cinema to see the Gozo 360 show, which traced the history of Gozo from when it was first inhabited through to now. Again it was nice to be somewhere cool and to sit down for a while!
We caught the bus back to the Rigiana, and couldn't wait to get our bathers on and jump into the pool to unwind and cool off after another day of sightseeing and great experiences.
