Madrid - Day 2

Sunday, September 11

After a nice sleep in we set off later than planned, but at least the number of people walking around had decreased dramatically from last night! It was a beautiful day for a stroll, and we checked out the Royal Theatre on our way along one of the many pedestrian only streets to the Puerta Del Sol. This is one of the main plazas in Madrid, and was surrounded by beautiful buildings containing all the big name brand shops, as well as lots of people enjoying their Sunday afternoon.

We stopped for lunch at a quaint little cafe, then set off again to Plaza Mayor, another nice square with colonnades to walk under so you weren't in the direct sun. It reminded us a bit of St. Marks Square in Venice but without the canals! Nearby was the gourmet San Miguel food market, where we settled for an espresso as we were still full from lunch.

A bit further along and we came to the Madrid Cathedral, which also has the largest crypt in Spain underneath it. We couldn't resist looking in the crypt and we were glad we did as it was in the Neo Roman style with lots of columns, beautiful stained glass windows and atmospheric lighting and music. The inside of the main Cathedral was decorated in a modern style and wasn't as grand as the other Cathedrals we saw in Seville and Malaga - we actually preferred our visit to the crypt!

Between the Cathedral and the Royal Palace is an open space, and we noticed a lot of film people and others fussing about a model looking girl in it. Curiosity got the better of us so we asked what it was about, and were told they were filming an episode of the Polish reality show "Top Model". It entertained us for a while watching all the takes and the preening that the presenters underwent in between takes!

We wandered back to our apartment, pausing in the nearby gardens to sit and watch the sun go down behind the Royal Palace.
